Finland was the shock story of qualification, winning six, losing four, and never drawing a game – achieving legendary status by being the first Finnish side to qualify for a major tournament. Finland finished behind group winners Italy by 12 points and never really looked like challengers to the former world champions. However, wins against the likes of Bosnia and Greece booked a sport at Euro 2020 with star striker Teemu Pukki scoring 10 in 10.
Russia made it to Euro 2020 with ease, finishing comfortably as runners-up to other Group B side Belgium by just six points.Stanislav Cherchesov guided the Russian’s to eight wins in 10, with Artem Dzyuba their top goalscorer with nine goals in qualifying.
Russia were handed one of the ‘easier’ looking groups to reach this summer’s tournament, this was emphasised by one-sided results such as their 5-0 wins over Cyprus and San Marino, as well as 9-0 drubbing over the latter in Saransk.
Finland, despite being an outside bet, scored 16 goals in qualifying, averaging 1.6 goals per game, but looked vulnerable on the break, conceding 10 in 10 – about 1.0 a game, but did enough to comfortably secure their passage to Euro 2020.
In stark contrast Russia averaged 3.3 goals per game in qualifying, scoring 33 times, conceding and average of 0.8 per game. Past head-to-heads don’t make comfortable reading for Finn boss Markku Kanerva, Russia have won their last four meetings with an aggregate score of 15-1.
Using the tournament two years ago where Russia were hosts as an indication, the national team didn’t shy away in-front of goal, and that trend continued through qualifying for Euro 2020. With Finland looking a little thin at the back it might be worth looking at the Over/Under Goals market, where there are odds of 6/5 on-offer for over 2.5 goals. Finland is a lucrative 4/1 to pull off a shock win in Saint Petersburg.
