The English Football League Trophy is a highly coveted trophy for the lower league teams in the English league system. Teams from League One and down are allowed to compete for this silverware and a final spot at Wembley. As well as League One and League Two clubs, Under 21 teams from 16 Premier League and Championship sides can also compete.

The EFL Trophy consists of the teams competing in Leagues One and Two, as well as 16 Under 21 sides of Premier League and Championship clubs. Currently known as the Checkatrade Trophy for sponsorship reasons, the competition is set into 16 regional groups. The top two teams from each group then go into a knockout tournament, with the last two teams meeting in the Final held at Wembley Stadium.

Bristol City are the competition’s most successful side, winning the trophy on three occasions. The current EFL Trophy holders are Lincoln City, who won the competition in the 2017/2018 season.
