The biggest hockey competition on the planet, the NHL, had an incredible finale in its Stanley Cup tournament. The teams that finished the regular season in third place, the Panthers, and those in fifth place, the Oilers, reached the very end of this competition. The Cup saw the maximum number of games played, all seven. After an incredibly thrilling battle, Florida lifted the trophy, and here’s how.
After a tough NFL league semifinal against the Rangers, the Panthers stormed towards the Stanley Cup trophy. In the first game played on June 9, they defeated the Oilers 3-0. Verhaeghe, Rodrigues, and Luostarinen were the scorers. On the other side, none of the Edmonton players scored.
Not long after, the strongest Floridians played their second duel with the strongest Canadians this year. Once again, with a three-goal difference, the Florida team defeated their Canadian rival. This time, the Panthers scored three goals and conceded one. The goals were scored by Mikkola and Ekblad with one each, while Rodrigues scored twice for the Panthers. The only scorer for the Oilers was Ekholm.
Three days after the second encounter, Florida and Edmonton clashed again. And for the third time, the Panthers managed to break the Oilers’ resistance and beat them 4-3. In this tough match, the goals for Florida were scored by Reinhart, Tarasenko, Bennett, and Barkov. On the other side, Foegele, Broberg, and McLeod were efficient. With this triumph, the Panthers took a huge 3-0 lead in the series.
As incredible as it sounds, Edmonton rose and retaliated against Florida with fierce firepower. Thus, this Canadian team managed to completely disarm and overpower their opponents from Florida in the fourth game. In other words, the Oilers beat the Panthers 8-1.
The fifth duel was closer, but Edmonton still dominated. Thus, the Canadians celebrated with a 5-3 victory. The goals for them were scored by Brown, Hyman, Perry, and McDavid, who put the puck in the net twice. For the Panthers, Tkachuk, Rodrigues, and Ekman-Larsson were precise.
While everything was still uncertain, the Oilers once again kept their cool in the new encounter. They managed to equalize the series at 3-3. Moreover, Edmonton once again convincingly outperformed their opponent. The five goals for the Canadians were scored by Foegele, Henrique, Hyman, McLeod, and Nurse. The only goal for the Panthers was scored by Barkov.
The match that decided the winner was very tough and had few goals. Both teams were fully committed to the game and wanted to do everything to win the title. The Panthers took the lead with a goal by Verhaeghe.
Then Edmonton equalized with a goal by Janmark. There were no more goals in the first part of the duel after that. The second period was also not rich in goals. Only one goal was scored in the entire period, by Reinhart on a breakaway.
The third period ended without a single goal. Florida managed to hold on until the end without conceding any goals. Although the Panthers didn’t score again, the final score of 2-1 was enough for them to win the Stanley Cup for the first time.
